Learn the most important German phrases before your trip to Germany!

  • Starts Jul 5
  • 125 US dollars
  • Online (via Zoom)

Class Description

You are planning a trip to Germany and would like to learn the most important words and phrases before? Then this course is for you! No previous knowledge will be required but we recommend that you join our free trial class to first learn the German pronunciation rules (a recording of the class will be provided for free for those signing up). As English is a Germanic language, that will already help you a lot as many words are spelled the same but pronounced differently. In the course, we will learn how to introduce ourselves, order a coffee or some pastries at a café or bakery, some food items at a restaurant. We will learn together how we can ask where something is (where are the bathrooms? where is the train station? etc.). We will learn some phrases needed in emergencies and of course, we will also teach you how to ask Germans if they speak English - just in case... Especially in bigger cities, most Germans will be happy to speak English with you, but you trying to speak in German first will be highly appreciated. We will not teach any grammar in this course; it is purely conversational. The course will be taught by Theresa, a native from Germany who will also be able and happy to share some insider info about Germany and answer questions you might have about the country. We will also look at the names of some common grocery store chains, the German pharmacy sign and similar things. If you would like to also learn the grammar, please look into our Duolingo course on Thursday nights. The Duolingo course in combination with this Travel Prep course will get you up to level A 1.2. If you wish to continue learning German after that, you could continue with a 10-week course for level A 1.2 starting from July 28. We have very small class sizes with a maximum of 5 students per class. That way, we ensure that all course participants receive a lot of one-on-one attention, so the class can be tailored to our students' needs. Please note that if only 1 student signed up for this course, we will have to cancel this course. Alternatively, you can choose to take 3 x 1-hour private classes instead (value: ~$200). The course fee of $125 covers all the costs - 4 classes à 1.5 hours, the course material and the registration fee. All online language courses are held via Zoom and we ask you to install the Zoom desktop app before the class. You will receive the link within 24 hours before the course starts.
